Animated quilt

From February to June in 2016, Greg Climer worked as an artist in residence at the Museum of Art and Design. During the residency, he quilted each frame of an animated film. The exploration into how images in quilts can be enhanced by persistence of vision resulted in a 1 second animated loop of him running through the streets of London.

This one-second animated loop is composed of 14 quilts, each measuring 24×36 and composed of custom printed 1″ squares. The completed quilts are photographed and assembled into the animated gif.
Like his other portrait quilts, the abstract nature of the physical objects cannot be experienced online. The act of photographing the quilts and reducing their size to fit the screen paradoxically reveals details which cannot be easily seen in their presence.
